So, what is the ideal terrain look like on an HD table?

Simply use the terraformation rules and we're good or have players found other configurations work better.

We've played two games so far and both times we had 4 or 5 medium sized (3x3x5" tall) pieces of terrain and both games were extremely close.

Coming from Infinity, I'm a bit conditioned to lots of terrain and also using terrain to get any advantage I can. I never was a fan of the 4 pieces of terrain for Confrontation, I always felt more but smaller terrain would have been better.

The terrain in the book looks fabulous but is such terrain functional?

Ranged fighting in this game doesn't seem to be overpowered so players hoping to field wide open non man's land or labrynths doesn't seem to pose as drastic an edge as in some other games.

Your thoughts on terrain.

I love the terraformation rules as they add another tactical aspect to the game. As LoS rules aren't so constraining it makes the whole game more interesting especially considering controlling of different areas, since with winning a certain 10"x10" block you can more or less decide how defendable it is or how it can be reached. Combine this aspect with the strange terrain of HD with its special effects and zones of conflict, you're sure to have an interesting game.
Late at night... I can still hear their screams... the tiny, innocent voices that cry "It was not us! It was not our fault! Why did we have to pay for your misgivings?"
...and I try to quieten them... the voices in my head and convince myself that I was right - and the dice had to be burned
